What is Doxpop?

Doxpop is a subscription-based service that provides enhanced access to public information. We currently provide access to court case information and recorded documents. Our information is the same information that you would normally obtain by visiting county government offices and either using a public access terminal or requesting the help of a county government employee. Doxpop is intended to help those who seek this information on a regular basis and hence provides easily used tools for searching. What does the Doxpop service provide?

Subscribers to Doxpop have access to over 5 million current and historical cases from 105 Indiana Courts in the Doxpop Network. In addition, our recently added Recorded Document database provides access to over 300,000 recorded documents in two counties. Several new counties are planning to join our Recorded Document service in the next few months. Doxpop allows for targeted searching of all records.

In addition to research tools, Doxpop also provides watch services which will notify a subscriber when events occur or new information has been added for particular cases of interest.

Attorneys who are subscribers may opt to receive notification when any new hearings are scheduled for their cases and may view a personal calendar on-line with links to case information for each hearing.

We maintain information on all case types with the exception of confidential cases such as mental health, juvenile paternity, and adoptions. To the extent that disposition information is entered on the county systems on the Doxpop network, we make it available to our subscribers.

Our data mirrors the data that would be available to a researcher working at a public access terminal in the courthouse, including financial transactions handled through the clerk's office.

What is the cost of Doxpop?

Access to basic information about open cases costs nothing and is available to everyone, without logging into our site. This information may be very limited, depending on the directives of the court.

Access to all cases and documents on our system is available by subscribing to one of our plans. Each plan includes access to advanced on-line search facilities, many useful features, and all information on our system.

Government Offices and Non-Profit Organizations can benefit from a reduced rate. A Government Organization is defined as any organization supported solely by tax revenues. A Non-Profit Organization (NPO) is defined as any organization with a 501 (c)(3) tax status. To benefit from this reduced rate, please call us at 866-369-7671 before signing up.

Who are our subscribers?

The types of professionals who have found our services useful are attorneys, title abstractors, bail bonds companies, government agencies, not-for-profits and many different research organizations.

What if I forget my username or password?

If you have forgotten your username, go to our forgotten username form. You will be asked to enter the e-mail address that you gave to Doxpop. After clicking the Go button we will send you an e-mail with your username.

If you have forgotten your password, go to our forgotten password form. You will be asked to enter your Doxpop username. After clicking the Go button we will e-mail you the security question that you set up at the time when you registered along with a link that will take you to a page where you will be asked to enter your answer to your security question. If you answer the question correctly (it is case sensitive), you will be asked to enter a new password and to reconfirm that password. When you click done, you will receive a confirmation that your password has been successfully changed. You can then click the continue link to log in using the new password.

If someone else is the administrator of the account that you use, that person will also be able to look up your username as well as reset your password.

What if an event is missing on my calendar?

There could be a variety of reasons that an event is not on your calendar:

  1. The event has not yet been entered by the court administrator's office. Depending on the court it may take 24-48 hours to be processed.
  2. Check that your State Bar ID is entered correctly.
  3. If you have multiple State Bar ID's, be sure that they are all entered in Doxpop.
  4. On rare occasions there could have been an error made by the court administrator's office when processing an event or in the transmission of events to Doxpop. You might want to check with either their office or with Doxpop. Our toll-free number is 866-369-7671, and support is available by phone from 8-5 on weekdays.

What time zone does Doxpop use?

Doxpop deals with counties in a number of different time zones. Whenever you see a date/time on the site it will be followed by a short time zone abbreviation (e.g. EST, EDT, CST). For more information on how Doxpop handles time zones, visit our timezone information page.

The system is not letting me in, but I do not receive an "invalid password or username" message. Why?

If you are having problems logging in, it may be because your web browser is not accepting session cookies. To identify logged-in users, Doxpop uses session cookies. See What are cookies? to learn more about them. This is how to set your browser to accept session cookies:

If you are running Internet Explorer version 5 (IE5):

  1. Start IE5.
  2. Select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu.
  3. If you see a "slider" control:
    1. Use the slider to set the security level to "Medium".
    2. Click on [OK]
  1. If you do not have a slider control:
    1. Click on "custom Level".
    2. In the security settings list that appears, scroll to the "cookies" section. It will be below the "ActiveX" area, and above the "downloads" area.
    3. Click on "enable" for the "Allow per-session cookies (not stored)" setting.
    4. Click on [OK], and Then on [Yes] to confirm the change.
    5. Click on [OK] to close the internet options box.

If you are running Windows XP or Internet Explorer V6 (IE6) on an older version of windows:

  1. Start IE6.
  2. Select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu.
  3. Click on the "Privacy" tab.
  4. Now you need to make a choice - IE6 gives you the option to allow session from all web sites, or just from specific sites. (You may want to read the FAQ on what session cookies are before making this choice.)
  5. If you decide that you want to allow session cookies from all sites:
  6. Move the slider to the "Medium" security level.
  7. Click on [OK]
  8. If you decide that you only want to allow session cookies from Doxpop:
  9. Click on [Edit] in the "Web Sites" section.
  10. In the "Address of Web Site" box, enter: www.doxpop.com
  11. Click on [Allow].
  12. Click on [OK] and then [OK] again to close the dialogue boxes.

What are cookies?

Requests sent to Internet sites through your browser are "context free", meaning that each message comes to us without any history or identifying information *unless* it is intentionally placed there by your browser. Without this identifying information we don't know who the request came from and hence don't know if you should be allowed access.

Cookies solve the problem of context. When you log in, our server hands a "session cookie" to your browser, and from that point forward, your browser sends the session cookie back with each request to our database to identify you as a valid user. You can think of a session cookie as an invitation that your browser presents to our doorkeeper each time you request entry to the registered user areas.

If your browser does not accept session cookies, the invitation gets thrown away, and you can't get in.

So if cookies are so useful, why wouldn't I always want them turned on? What is the privacy issue?

Some people would prefer to be completely anonymous. Without cookies turned on, you stand a better chance of remaining anonymous.

There are also two types of cookies:

A per-session cookie (which is what Doxpop uses) goes away as soon as you close your browser, so it can't be used to do things like track whether you have previously connected to a site, or how often you have visited. When you close your browser, we don't leave any trace of the session on your computer.

This is in contrast to "persistent cookies", which are cookies that are stored on your computer's hard drive, and are used by many web sites to track your usage habits. Many people consider cookies stored on their hard drive to be an invasion of privacy, since it allows the web site to identify you before you have chosen to identify yourself by logging in or supplying some other information.

For Doxpop to work properly, your web browser must be configured to accept first-party, session-only cookies. Test to see if your browser accepts cookies from Doxpop.

Although you'll want to make your own decisions about security, most people feel that a "per session" cookie is much less of a risk to their anonymity than the persistent cookies.
